Surgical Services

 

Our staff at Lake City Community Hospital’s Surgery Department provides outstanding patient care prior to, during, and following surgery.

 
Our scope of surgical services include: 

  • General

  • Orthopedic

  • Podiatry

  • Endoscopic

 

Prior to your surgery date, you will be scheduled for a preoperative interview.  You will first go to the registration desk, from there, you will go to the Day Hospital.   One of our nurses will meet with you and obtain a complete medical history, give you any instructions that you may need and answer any questions that you may have concerning your surgery.  After your interview, you may be sent for pre-surgical testing such as lab work or xray’s.  An EKG will be performed on all patients who are 50 years old or older.

 

The night before surgery:

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.

 

The day of surgery:

  • Do not eat or drink anything unless your physician specifically orders medications or clear liquids.

  • If applicable, bring a copy of legal guardianship papers, a Living Will or a durable Healthcare Power of Attorney.

  • Leave jewelry, money, and other valuables at home.

  • Bring a container to store contact lenses or glasses

  • Bring reading materials, puzzles, or other handwork in case of delays

  • Plan to arrive at Lake City Community Hospital Outpatient Surgery Department at your assigned time, be sure to stop at the registration desk first.

 

After your surgery:

  • Do not drive a car, operate complex machinery, drink alcoholic beverages or take medications for 24 hours unless otherwise indicated by your physician.

  • Postpone important decisions and signing important papers for 24 hours.

  • Rest and recuperate following the written and verbal instructions reviewed with you at the time of discharge.

 

The effects of anesthesia:

  • You may experience intermittent lightheadedness for the remainder of the day.

  • When taking pain medications, you may experience dizziness or drowsiness.

  • Have someone stay with you the night after your surgery.

  • Eat lightly at first, and gradually advance back to your regular diet.

  • Sore throat and/or cough are common with general anesthesia.   Salt water gargles or lozenges help.

  • If you experience severe nausea and/or vomiting, call your physician or come to the emergency room.
